What Cowork is
How it differs from Claude Chat and what tasks it's built for
Claude Cowork: delegating, not collaborating
Claude Chat is a back-and-forth conversation — you ask, Claude responds, you ask again. Claude Cowork is different: you give Claude a task, it works on it autonomously (potentially for minutes or longer), and it reports back with results. You are not in the loop for every step.
The metaphor: Chat is working alongside Claude. Cowork is delegating to Claude.

When NOT to use Cowork
- When you want to stay closely involved in every step
- When the task requires your judgment at multiple decision points
- For quick one-off questions or simple tasks
- When you’re not confident in the task brief (refine it in Chat first)
The Cowork mindset: Treat it like assigning work to a capable contractor. The quality of what you get back depends almost entirely on the quality of the brief you give. Vague brief = vague output. Clear brief = production-ready output.
