Skills & custom instructions
How to build reusable instruction sets for your workflows
What skills are
In Claude’s ecosystem, skills are reusable instruction sets that tell Claude how to handle specific types of work. They are the difference between Claude giving you a generic response and Claude following your agency’s specific workflow, format, and standards every time.
Three levels of instruction persistence
| Level | What it is | Persists across |
|---|---|---|
| In-message | Instructions in your current prompt | This response only |
| System prompt / Custom instructions | Pre-set instructions in Claude.ai settings | All conversations |
| Skills (Cowork/Teams) | Named, triggerable instruction packages | All conversations + triggerable on demand |
Building your own skill library
# BConverse Skills Library
## SKILL: Client Status Update
When writing a client status update:
- Format: This week / Next week / One thing from you
- Tone: Professional but warm, like a trusted advisor
- Length: Under 120 words total
## SKILL: Site Audit Finding
Format each finding as:
- Area: [what part of the site]
- Issue: [what's wrong, one sentence]
- Impact: [why it matters to the client's goal]
- Fix: [what to do, non-technical language]
- Priority: High / Medium / Low
## SKILL: Proposal Section — Investment
- Present as a range, not a single number
- Include what's in scope and explicitly what's not
- Never include hourly rates
Using custom instructions in Claude.ai
Claude.ai has a custom instructions feature that acts as a persistent system prompt. Use it to store:
- Who you are and what your agency does
- Default tone and format preferences
- Client names and ongoing context
- Things Claude should never do in your responses
Action: Write down 5 types of content you produce regularly. For each one, document: the format, the tone, the length target, and 2-3 things it should never include. That’s your skills library starter kit.
