Platform Considerations (Shopify, WooCommerce & Beyond)
How Claude fits around your storefront platform, not inside it
Claude doesn’t log into your store
This is worth saying plainly: Claude can’t see your Shopify admin, your WooCommerce dashboard, or your live storefront unless you show it. There’s no automatic sync. Your workflow is always some version of export or copy from your platform, work with Claude, then paste or import the result back. Once you know that’s the shape of it, working across platforms gets a lot simpler.
The three ways content moves between Claude and your store
| Method | Best for | How it works |
|---|---|---|
| Copy-paste, one at a time | Single listings, one-off emails, individual support replies | You paste product specs in, copy the finished text out, paste into your admin field |
| Bulk via spreadsheet / CSV | Updating dozens or hundreds of listings at once | Export a CSV of products, work through it with Claude column by column, re-import |
| Formatted for a specific field | Meta descriptions, SMS, ad headlines with strict character limits | You tell Claude the exact constraint (e.g., “155 characters max”) up front |
Shopify specifics worth knowing
- Product CSV exports include columns like Title, Body (HTML), Type, Tags, and Variant data. When you ask Claude to draft descriptions for a bulk export, tell it the description needs to be valid basic HTML (Shopify’s “Body (HTML)” field renders tags like
<p>and<strong>). - Metafields (used for things like care instructions or size guides on many themes) are just more fields — describe the metafield’s purpose to Claude the same way you’d describe any other field.
- SEO title and meta description have their own character limits (roughly 70 and 160 characters) — always state the limit explicitly in your prompt.
WooCommerce specifics worth knowing
- Short description vs. long description are two separate fields with different jobs — short description is often what shows near the “Add to Cart” button, long description is the full product page copy. Ask Claude for both, and say which is which.
- Product CSV imports follow WooCommerce’s own column structure, which varies by plugin (WooCommerce core exporter vs. third-party importers) — check your specific import tool’s expected headers before bulk-editing.
- Category and attribute taxonomies are worth listing out for Claude if you want consistent tagging across a bulk content pass.
Bulk work: a practical pattern
I'm updating product descriptions for 40 SKUs in a Shopify CSV export.
I'll paste products in batches of 5. For each one, using the columns
Title, Type, and Tags, write a new "Body (HTML)" value: 2 short
paragraphs, wrapped in tags, matching the brand voice profile
above. Keep the existing Title as-is unless it's under 3 words.
Batch 1:
1. Title: Aspen Throw Blanket | Type: Blanket | Tags: wool, grey, 50x60in
2. Title: Birch Coasters (Set of 4) | Type: Coasters | Tags: wood, birch, set-of-4
...
Working in small batches (5-10 rows) rather than pasting an entire 200-row export keeps each response easy to check and easy to paste back into your spreadsheet without losing track of which row is which.
Tip: Whatever platform you’re on, always ask Claude to output content in the exact format you’ll paste it into — plain text, HTML, or Markdown — rather than converting formats by hand afterward.
Apps and integrations
Some Shopify and WooCommerce apps now build Claude or other AI models directly into their tools (product description generators, review-response apps, etc.). Those can be a real time-saver, but they’re built on the same underlying idea covered in this lesson: give the model your product data and a format, get a draft back. Understanding the manual version means you’ll get more out of any app version too, and you won’t be stuck if the app’s defaults don’t match your brand voice.
Warning: Before installing any third-party app that connects your store data to an AI service, check its privacy policy for how it handles customer data — the same caution from Lesson 2 applies to any tool with access to your store, not just Claude directly.
Try it: Export a small batch (5-10 products) from your store as a CSV, open it in a spreadsheet, and paste just the Title/Type/Tags columns into Claude asking for draft descriptions in your platform’s expected format.
